This section provides information about the local election, registering to vote, verifying voter information, and finding out where to vote on Election Day.

About the Local Election


The primary governing body of the City of Westminster is the city council. The Westminster City Council is comprised of five elected council members, which includes an elected mayor. Council members each serve a four-year term with the mayor serving a two-year term.

At the November 8, 2016 election, voters will elect the following:

    -Mayor (one seat, two-year term)

    -Council Member (two seats, four-year term each)

Westminster residents will also vote on one local ballot measure: Measure SS.

Voter Registration

Residents interested in registering to vote are encouraged to use the California online voter registration system at 
http://registertovote.ca.gov/.

Applications for voter registration in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese are also available at City Hall, 8200 Westminster Blvd., during regular business hours.

Please note: Voter registration is processed through the County of Orange Registrar of Voters office and not through the City of Westminster. Therefore, if you have any questions regarding voter registration, contact the ROV directly at (714) 567-7600.

To register to vote in California, you must be:

    • A United States citizen,
    • A resident of California,
    • 18 years of age or older on Election Day,
    • Not found by a court to be mentally incompetent, and
    • Not in prison, on parole, serving a state prison sentence in county jail, serving a sentence for a felony, or on post release community supervision.

Voter registration deadline:

The deadline to register to vote in the November 8, 2016 election in California is Monday, October 24, 2016. You must submit your online voter registration by 11:59:59 p.m. or have your application postmarked by October 24, 2016. If you opt to register in person, you must register before the end of the business day at the Orange County Registrar of Voters' office at

Changes to your current voter registration:

If you, move, change your name, or change your political party choice, you must re-register to vote. Click here to verify your current voter registration and make changes if necessary.

Vote-by-mail option:

Registered voters may apply to receive a one-time paper ballot by mail or become a permanent vote-by-mail voter. For more information and to apply, click here to be redirected to the Registrar of Voters' website.

Your Polling Location/Where to Vote

The polls are open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. To view your assigned polling place, click here to access your voter information on the Orange County Registrar of Voters' page.

Your assigned polling location will also be printed on the sample ballot you receive by mail prior to the election. You may also contact your county elections office directly at (714) 567-7600 for polling place information. 

Early in-person voting location:

The Orange County Registrar of Voters is offering early in-person voting and voting services at various locations throughout the county. There will be one early voting location in Westminster:

Located in the Westminster Library Meeting room with entrance on the north side of the building. Parking is in front of the library on south and east lots. 

    Early voting hours:
    October 29-November 4, 2016: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
    November 5-7, 2016: 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
